Installation instructions:
Installing the Icons-4-Us Total System Makeover requires ResEdit. If you don't have a copy, you can download one from ftp.apple.com or buy a book with ResEdit included on disk such as "MacWorld's Macintosh Secrets" or "Zen and the Art of Resource Editing."
–––>It is generally recommended that, when using ResEdit, you work on a copy of whatever file your are modifying rather than the original. This is particularly good advice when altering the System file or Finder.
• Modifying TeachText (TeachText needs to be modified to create the improved generic TEXT and PICT document icons.):
1. Option/drag a copy of TeachText onto your desktop
2. Double-click on the "TeachText Icons" file in the Total System Makeover folder
3. Choose "Select All" from ResEdit's Edit menu
4. Choose "Copy" from ResEdit's Edit menu
5. Close the "TeachText Icons" file
6. Use ResEdit to open the copy of TeachText
7. Choose "Paste" from ResEdit's Edit menu
ResEdit will ask you "Replace resources with same ID?"
8. Click the "Yes" button.
9. Close the file and save changes when prompted to do so
10. Replace your original TeachText with the modified one
(If, like many people, you have several copies of TeachText on your hard drive, you should discard all of the unmodified copies so your system is using only the improved version to determine what icons it will use.)
• Modifying the System file:
1. Option/drag a copy of System file onto your desktop
2. Double-click on the "System Icons" file in the Total System Makeover folder
3. Choose "Select All" from ResEdit's Edit menu
4. Choose "Copy" from ResEdit's Edit menu
5. Close the "System Icons" file
6. Use ResEdit to open the copy of the System file
7. Choose "Paste" from ResEdit's Edit menu
ResEdit will ask you "Replace resources with same ID?"
8. Click the "Yes" button.
9. Close the file and save changes when prompted to do so
10. Drag your original System file into the trash
11. Drag your modified System file into the System Folder
12. Re-start your Mac and empty the trash
• Modifying the Finder:
(Sorry, I know it‘s redundant to list all of these steps again, but I don’t want to be responsible for anyone accidentally damaging their System software...)
1. Option/drag a copy of the Finder onto your desktop
2. Double-click on the "Finder Icons" file in the Total System Makeover folder
3. Choose "Select All" from ResEdit's Edit menu
4. Choose "Copy" from ResEdit's Edit menu
5. Close the "Finder Icons" file
6. Use ResEdit to open the copy of the Finder
7. Choose "Paste" from ResEdit's Edit menu
ResEdit will ask you "Replace resources with same ID?"
8. Click the "Yes" button.
9. Close the file and save changes when prompted to do so
10. Drag your original Finder into the trash
11. Drag your modified Finder into the System Folder
12. Re-start your Mac and empty the trash
–––> While re-starting your Mac this last time, hold down the Option & Command keys. This will “rebuild the desktop” making all of the newly installed icons visible.
